CURIOSITIES
31" X 33"
This fiber piece reimagines African wax batik fabric through reassembly and hundreds of hand-stitched marks. Warm tones and layered textures reflect the life process—fragmented, re-formed, and carried forward through thread, memory, and time.

Curiosities plays at the edge of order and improvisation, where structure gives way to intuitive rhythm. A central grid offers balance, while borders shift and pulse with chromatic energy—arcs, dots, and stripes forming a visual language of movement and disruption. Pattern resists symmetry, inviting the viewer into a layered exploration of play, perception, and the quiet thrill of the unexpected.

Each of the hundreds of wrapped and tied scrolls in the center represents victims of our time and the victims of time passed. The orange scrolls represent community as they tightly surround those in the center offering support and solidarity. I hope you can feel the strength of that support on both sides of those standing in the center.

Where the Light Breaks evokes a quiet tension between dark and light, with bold black and saffron creating a luminous contrast reminiscent of an Indian palette. Purple accents repeat the core pattern, as if they’ve broken away from the saffron and claimed a space of their own. Subtle couching lines suggest places where the light has begun—or could one day—break through.

At the heart of Unspooled lies a mandala-like form or abstract flower, composed of delicate long stitches radiating outward in fine, flowing lines. This intricate center draws the eye inward before releasing it into the surrounding space. Along the edges, free form stitching unravels the composition, creating a sense of motion and gradual release—as if the structure is gently unspooling into open space.

Breakthrough captures the moment just before transformation. Bold black and white strokes move across the surface, but none reach completion—as if arrested mid-motion. Their unfinished nature creates a sense of tension and anticipation. From this fragmented field, flat planes of bright red emerge: a rectangle, a block, a sharp triangle peeking in from the bottom edge. Above it all, deep concentric crevices layer the surface, evoking the pressure and force it takes to rupture ground that once felt immovable.

Unexpected color combinations draw the eye into Ripple Effect, where striped fabrics meet the quiet presence of linen solids. Vertically couched threads and hemp cord create a rhythmic flow, like ripples expanding outward, distorting and redefining the surface. The interplay of structure and movement echoes the way small actions send waves through time, shifting and reshaping everything in their path.

This piece uses linen and cotton textiles to reinterpret the classic log cabin quilt design. The horizontal and vertical printed stripes intersect with opposing stitching, creating a compelling juxtaposition that animates the fabric’s surface. Randomly inserted linen pieces punctuate the design, adding both texture and a sense of containment. The result is a dynamic interplay of contrasts and coherence.

Inside Politics 25 is a meditation on the unstable terrain we all navigate, a landscape of shifting lines and fragmented pathways. This textile piece weaves together a diversity of stitching techniques—some structured, some unruly—mirroring the unpredictable forces at play. A faint topographic map emerges, yet it leads nowhere, an echo of circular debates and uncertain ground. Without taking sides, the piece captures the essence of political discourse: layered, intricate, perpetually in flux.

“Celestial Spheres” is a fiber art piece using Nigerian batiks. The work juxtaposes vibrant circular patterns with bold, graphic vertical lines. Four groups of couched hemp cord begin as single forms, then diverge, open up, and reconnect, simulating processes of separation and repair, like crevices in the earth. The dynamic interplay of these elements rests on a deep black background, where french knots evoke a starry night sky. landscapes with celestial mysteries.

This piece delves into the topography of life's journey, reflecting the delicate interplay between order and disruption. Beneath the flowing topographic lines lies a structured and seemingly organized foundation. However, a single displaced element disrupts this harmony, drawing attention to the unpredictable shifts that define our paths. The contrast between the structured layers and the misplaced fragment symbolizes those moments in life when the expected is interrupted, forcing a re-calibration of direction.
A rhythm of structure and spontaneity plays across A Little Bit of Chaos, where an array of squares, rectangles, and fragmented lines intersect in unexpected harmony. This piece is a dynamic exploration of technique—stitched, pieced, layered—each element contributing to a sense of movement and tension. Hints of striped fabric emerge like whispers of order within the disorder, while varied stitching techniques add texture and depth.

Circa 65 is a reflection on time—both personal and collective. As I continue exploring life’s journeys through shapes, colors, and textures, this piece pauses to look inward. The palette is deeply nostalgic, echoing the hues of a world I once knew in the 1960s—a time of complexity yet perceived simplicity. Unlike the layered interruptions and winding pathways in my other works, Circa 65 feels more defined, more assured in its composition. There is a sense of home here, a calm familiarity that anchors me within its woven and stitched landscape.

SPIRIT HYMN, 2024
Spirit Hymn features four distinct blocks of color bands. Some are wide and bold, asserting their presence, while others, equally bold, frame the piece, holding it together with a cohesive embrace. The free-form stitches that dance across the surface suggest gentle rain, a soft, rhythmic patter that evokes a sense of tranquility and reflection. This interplay of color and texture imbues this piece with a spiritual warmth, a sanctuary of comfort and safety.

"Life Ladders" is a large art quilt that intricately weaves together the diverse steps of life's journey. Each row, pieced improvisationally, varies in size and form, yet all converge at horizontal intersections. This convergence symbolizes the myriad paths we traverse, each step unique yet interconnected, creating a tapestry of experiences that shape our existence. The quilt's fluidity and spontaneity reflect the unpredictable nature of our lives, celebrating the beauty found in the unplanned and the unexpected.
