QUADRANTS, 2023

This piece tells the poignant story of a Holocaust survivor who tossed a postcard from a boxcar while being transported by the Nazis. The postcard conveyed messages of love and hope, along with specific directions for where the family should meet if the war ended and they survived. The actual card was ultimately found and shared with me by the family members during one of my workshops. This piece serves as a powerful symbol of enduring hope and the personal connections that persisted despite the horrors of the time.

"Mary Anne" is a whimsical quilt that explores a spectrum of warm colors. The design transitions from fragmented straight pieces to gently curved shapes nestled in the center. Inspired by the quilters of Gee's Bend, Alabama, this art quilt embodies the spirit of improvisation and creativity. Much like the Gee's Bend quilters, the approach to this piece celebrates spontaneity and artistic freedom, making each section a unique exploration of texture and hue.

This piece tells the poignant story of Guatemala's genocide, where many men were forcibly disappeared, leaving their families in perpetual mourning. The quilt features women depicted in their respective pouches, symbolizing their enduring grief and uncertainty. Alongside them, wrapped and tied pieces of cloth represent the lost individuals, creating a visual narrative of loss, remembrance, and the unresolved pain that continues to affect those left behind.

This piece is famed in a black float framed. There is no glass, the fabric is exposed.

This fiber art wall hanging is crafted from African wax batik fabric. The vibrant pattern suggests a desire to take flight, breaking free from the constraints that hold it in place. Yet, it’s the stitching that binds this piece together—each stitch serves as a tether, connecting the shapes and grounding the composition. These threads weave a narrative of both connection and containment, emphasizing the delicate balance between freedom and structure. This piece is Machine pieced and hand quilted.

"Alternative Directions" is an evocative assemblage of geometric shapes, both small and large, strategically placed in various orientations. This deliberate arrangement creates a sense of dynamic chaos, reflecting the unpredictability and multifaceted nature of life's journey. This piece began with a foundation of a yellow pattern brushed cotton fabric designed based on a Klimt theme. A band of stepped color patterns create an inner frame of the piece. Small pieces were raw edge appliqued throughout and a variety of threading/stitching techniques were used to secure them.

This deconstructed and reconstructed Japanese cloth has been artfully reassembled to incorporate graceful curves that juxtapose against angular circles. The vibrant energy and movement within the design captivate invites the viewer to explore the harmonious balance between structure and spontaneity.
